TRABAJOS NECESARIOS EN EL CAMPO - NECESSARY COURSE MAINTENANCE

Ultimas Noticias: Mantenimiento de Campo

Estimados socios:

Update: Necessary Course Maintenance

Dear Members,

We want to keep you informed of our plans for the continuing maintenance of the Las Brisas Golf Course.

Members, who have been at the club over the recent summer months, will, like us, have been very disappointed with the ryegrass seeding to the rough areas, and, also following the refurbishment, the recovery of the Bermuda grass fairways (especially holes 2 and 3 and 8).

There is no reason to believe that this year has had adverse exceptional circumstances, and, while we expect course conditions in the coming weeks to improve greatly due to the September over seeding, it is recognised that something has to be done to ensure sustainable, year round quality.

For the front nine fairways, the proposed solution is to repair and sod with Bermuda grass fairways 1, 2, 3 and 8 during September.

For the rough areas, we are planning a two-step killing process of the remaining grasses (kikuyu and ryegrass) so that the new seeding has the maximum opportunity to germinate and that the future grass cover is uniform and, more importantly, free of weed. The seeding is planned to happen in mid-September; the grass that has been chosen and tested is “Tall Fescue” grass that is much more tolerant to our climate, soil and water conditions. This grass has also been proven in courses like, RCG El Prat, PGA of Catalunya, RC de Pineda, and Santana Golf.  We are expecting germination two weeks after seeding, and first mowings in the next two weeks after germination.

We would like to make you aware that:

·      During the first stage, Members will observe that the roughs will completely die off; germination of new seed will then follow.
·      Until germination, it is necessary to keep soils wet for 24 hours with continuous irrigation. You will find the course over irrigated in some areas and bare soil will incentivise puddles in some of the places.
·      Buggies will need to keep on the cart paths until a good establishment has occurred. This process could take  several weeks.

For the three operations (sodding of fairways, killing of roughs and seeding) to happen, we need to close front nine holes.  The calendar below shows the closure period for the front nine holes.

*Dates in red - front 9 hole closure.

In addition to these extra maintenance works, we will over seed roughs, with the same tall fescue grasses, on the back nine holes and all the fairways with “Poa Trivialis” from the beginning of October; this will give another extra 2 weeks for the Bermuda to cover on the fairways of the front nine holes.

Two tee positions will be placed on the Back Nine for those Members who would like to play the back nine twice during the closure of the front nine.

We will continue to keep you informed of progress.

INFORME DE AGOSTO - AUGUST REPORT

Informe sobre el estado del campo: Agosto 2013
GREENES:

Report on the condition of the course:  August 2013
 GREENS:
The greens on the front nine are in excellent condition and the ball is rolling true and at a good and consistent speed. The back nine greens are doing well considering the very hot conditions.
We would like to congratulate the course manager and the green keeping staff on their achievements particularly on the back nine greens.
 TEES:
The front nine tees are in very good condition; the back nine tees are in poor condition, and again they will not really improve until after the forthcoming renovation.
 BUNKERS:
The front nine bunkers are in very good condition, as you would expect following the refurbishment last year.  However, the back nine bunkers are in desperate need of renewing and will not greatly improve until after the forthcoming renovation.
 FAIRWAYS:
Holes 2 and 3 have suffered due to the late finish of the refurbishment last year, missing the growing season for Bermuda grass.   Consequently, Bermuda grass coverage was weak in the fairways, particularly in the areas affected by shaping, and on irrigation and drainage trenches. Once the growing season for Bermuda grass was over, fairways were overseeded with ryegrass, since this was the only option to go throughout the winter with good playing conditions.
These holes will need partly sodding with new Bermuda grass this year and later in the year will be accessed.  At present, they are in an intensive growing programme, with the turfing work helping to recuperate them soon.
 ROUGH:
With cost in mind, ryegrass as the turf species for our roughs was selected; we try to achieve the best playability standards possible. However, it has proved that this species does not adapt to our local weather conditions, to our heavy soils, and to our recycle irrigation water during summer months, even though it looked excellent the rest of the year.  We are still looking at alternatives, and will keep you informed. Complete Bermuda is possibly the best solution, with yearly overseeding; however, this option would be extremely hard to implement due to our rough having hardly any Bermuda present, and our main cover is bad grasses and as been for many years.
At this moment, we are studying all options. In September, like every year, fairways and roughs will be overseeded again to return them to the well-covered and excellent appearance we all enjoyed last winter.
We are sure that, following the refurbishment of the back nine next year and the measures that will be put in place as described above, we can all look forward to enjoying the course in great condition all year round.

Best Wishes,
Greens Committee and Course Manager.

The red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus has become one of the most difficult pests for the Spanish palm trees, particularly for the canary palm and to a lesser extent to the date palm. What began as a small focus from some imported palms from Egypt has turned to be the end for thousands of specimens along the Spanish geography.

Control has been ineffective due to the lack of natural predators. At present it is recommended, in addition to a set of cultural practices, the use of a preventive insecticide program along with the installation of traps for eradication and scouting.

The black olive tree scale Saissetia oleae is a typical pest in olive trees, but it could infect other species if they are located close to affected olive trees. This insect is known because the adult females become a scale attached to the leaves. They lay eggs that stay under the female scale, until worms are of a good size to leave their shelter. It is very difficult to reach these worms with an insecticide then. This insect secretes molasses that falls over lower leaves and branches. A black fungus uses it for food. Even though this fungus is not a parasite, it could cover and suffocate some leaves.
In other to apply a contact insecticide it is necessary that worms have left their shelter, which normally occurs in june-july.

To control these pests Real Club de Golf Las Brisas has the support of professional companies doing regular treatments.

Please note that on Tuesday and Wednesday 16-17th of July, 9 holes will be closed each day until mid-morning to spray palm trees and cape chestnuts. You may get more details in the proshop.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Kikuyu control on Fairways

In an attempt to control this invasive weed, fairways in the front nine will be sprayed with a herbicide this week.

This herbicide does not only affect kikuyu but will also kill ryegrass, the grass we have used this winter on fairways for overseeding. This has two implications:

·       Herbicide can be spread by the buggies tyres from fairways to roughs, leaving tracks of dead ryegrass on roughs behind. This means the treated area will be closed to buggies for one full day after treatment. Please follow the instructions on the sings. (Wednesday holes 1, 5 and 8; Thursday holes 2, 3 and 6)
·       Even though bermuda is now well established in the fairways, there is a good amount of ryegrass still surviving that will suddenly dye leaving a general brown colour until the bermuda takes its place. Moreover, we know some areas have very little bermuda since it was not planted on time during past refurbishment. These areas will remain bare and will need to be sodded soon.

This is part of our herbicide program that will help to maintain a clean stand of turf. We apologize for any inconvenience it may cause.

ENGLISH

During this spring, we have tried to prepare the different areas of the course for the arrival of the summer. First, we have worked out the soil aerifying and topdressing; second, we have checked the irrigation system to guarantee an even precipitation when most needed. Green, tees and aprons aerification were conducted during the maintenance week of May, and roughs were also initiated. During this week we were also able to fertilize the course and to apply some herbicides.
We are currently immersed in the beginning of the most difficult season for Las Brisas, since the winter species (ryegrass and poa trivialis) are transitioning to our warm season species (bermuda). This is particularly true on fairways (18 holes) and roughs (10-18 holes). Managing the irrigation we can control this transition, otherwise this process may be too fast, with the sudden death of the ryegrass/poa when the bermuda is not well covered yet. We have commented in other reports how difficult is to manage irrigation with the system we got and the soils we are dealing with.

FRONT NINE:

Greens: they are in good condition now that they have healed from last aerification.
Our goal is to maintain fast greens all year around, then Las Brisas will be known for this feature. To achieve this, we will maintain a low mowing height and use light rollers on a weekly basis to be sure the ball rolls consistently. Since we do not have a light topdresser (the heavy ones leave tracks on the greens) we will also verticut the greens every week to control thatch; finally we will continue with our plant growth regulator application that produces a dense, short grass.
To produce firm greens with a deep root system, irrigation in this area will take place every 3-4 days; the days when this happens one may find them a bit soft. Finally, we are tracking the salt content in the greens so whenever levels are too high we can react accordingly.

Tees and aprons: they require daily watering because the surrounds are ryegrass and tend to get dry easily.
Now they are a bit thatchy since we were not able to topdress these areas during maintenance week. We have plans to topdress soon to control this problem.

Fairways: transition from cool season to warm season grasses is in process, yet there are many areas where we don't have the certainty that the bermuda has covered completely, so we cannot push the rygrass decay.
This has a major significance in the control of kikuyu on bermuda fairways, since the herbicides we use also kill the ryegrass; so if we start too early applying the herbicide we can find large bare areas. At some point we should consider starting with applications since the amount of kikuyu is high. Then we will have to be prepared to sod those areas were bermuda is lacking.
Aerification and topdressing program will start soon, now that roughs are almost done.

Roughs: they have been reseeded several times this fall and winter, sometimes with ryegrass, others with fescue; last reseeding took place during the aerification and topdressing to achieve a better germination.
We have finished with a first application of sand, but we intend to do it once again after the fairways for a total layer of 0.5-1 cm this year.
So far we are holding well these areas, but where irrigation is poor or whenever there is a problem with a sprinkler, rough gets dry quickly and does not recover well, needing new seeds (ryegrass do not recover once is dry, as it happens with bermuda). However, avoiding dry conditions sometimes means other areas get to much water, and only with a laborious work of fine tuning we can slightly correct these differences.
Kikuyu control is not being very effective as the cool season grasses do not really compete with this weed in mid-summer. This factor does not help but still we continue with our strategy, trying also new combinations of herbicides.

SECOND NINE:

Greens: they were also aerifyed last month, since we are doing the same maintenance program here than in the new greens. We think they are in quite good condition, although the amount of poa is obviously much greater than in the new greens. This, added to the fact that it is a variety that is not as dwarf, makes speed slightly slower.
For poa control we have used a growth regulator that is preventing the seed head formation, which is actually what causes the ball to roll untrue.
Considering that drainage in these old greens are not as efficient, salinity control must be carefully analyzed and followed to wash down salts at the right time.
We have recently applied fungicides to control diseases, because this variety is more susceptible to dollar spot and brown patch.

Fairways: the bermuda in these holes is much denser and present less poa trivialis because this species dye back easier than the ryegrass. Currently our efforts will go to control irrigation to avoid areas too dry or too wet, even though the irrigation system is not as good and do not give us much level of control as in the new holes. We trust fairways will be presented in good shape this summer.

Rough: perhaps the worst area of the entire course. The amount of surface where we do not have bermuda or kikuyu is surprising, and we can only rely on keeping alive the ryegrass from this winter overseeding to present some turf. As ryegrass is dying, as a result of a deficient irrigation, large bare patches appear. In addition, the large amount of kikuyu makes rough appearance quite irregular. In a normal situation I would advise to reseed roughs with bermuda to colonized these areas; however, this will be the last summer before refurbishment and reseeding will be useless.
In other to keep ryegrass alive as long as possible, we will often need to create wet areas. This happens because irrigation system is poor, with frequent interference with trees and a mix of different types of sprinklers. We will still try to adjust sprinkler times, aerify the wet areas and do manual watering with hoses to minimize puddles.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Weed control: once again we emphasize the difficulty of kikuyu control. We should learn from errors and take all possible measures to minimize this problem in the back nine refurbishment. We are designing a strategy to ensure a minimum incidence of kikuyu after the refurbishment. These actions will guide the beginning of the work; the deadlines we are thinking of are:

· First weeks of September: first application with broad spectrum herbicide in roughs and fairways (not apply to green and tees surrounds, where different strategies are programed). These nine holes will be closed for two or three days to avoid herbicide contamination to greens and tees. The herbicide will leave the turf dead (brown) in a week. We will continue watering and fertilizing to promote regrowth of grass. The course will be open meanwhile.
· Second treatment after 3 weeks. Closure of these holes for two or three days is also needed.
· Two days later we will overseed all these dead areas with ryegrass to make them playable until the beginning of refurbishment. In two weeks we should see full germination and in a month it must be well established.
· Refurbishment would begin by the first week of March. Back nine will be definitely close and new herbicide application will take place.

Algae control: Chemical application has slightly reduced the proliferation of algae.

Drainage: we have just identified a couple of old drains that need to be fixed around 3rd tee. A line of gutters will be installed along the cart path from 2nd green to the creek to collect the water in this area. We already got this gutter in maintenance waiting for future installation.

Irrigation: this task is really taking most of our attention and time, still it generates many complaints. We have recently identified a problem in the program that generated excess water in many areas; from now on it will be easier to adjust and reduce sprinkler times in many situations that have been a problem in the past.
We have repaired the prefilter in the irrigation lake that was broken. Unfortunately it was fixed to the foundation with concrete so this job required a team of professional divers.
A first attempt has been made to seal the leak of the irrigation lake at 12th but it has been failed. We will try it again emptying the lake.
We have already ordered a new pump to replace the broken one. Cost is approx. 12,000 euros, but since we have sold the old sprinklers for 9,000 euros, final cost will be 3,000 euros.
Last problem is that we have to fix the electric panel the controls the pumps of the wells, with an estimated cost of 1,500 euros.

Landscaping:

· Proposed 8th tee, 4th green and tee trees have been planted.
· Three cedar trees and one acrocarpus tree on the 7th tee have been allocated and will be planted soon.
· Two landscape projects with herbaceous plants on 3rd tee and 2nd creek have been finished.
· Another parterre on the 1st tee has been redesigned.
· We are waiting to receive some trees free of charge to replace some that have died from the refurbishment of the front nine.
· Cuts from pruning in the trees at 2nd tee have been sealed with paint.
· We have started with the identification of the trees in the back nine in preparation for the refurbishment.
