GOLF COURSE REPORT: MAY 2013

Now that winter is over and temperatures have started to improve, it is time to increase grass density in the front nine, especially in the rough (where it is really needed) and on the greens. At the same time, we need to prepare the course to handle a possible hard summer. This means working to produce large and dense roots, which will be achieved with aeration and soil amendments. Last month, we aerified and top-dressed the greens, aprons and tees, and this will be repeated in May, along with the fairways and rough cultivation and topdressing to the front nine. Irrigation and drainage revision also progress adequately.

FRONT NINE

Greens: have gained good density. The use of a growth regulator is helping to reduce shoot growth and controlling poa annua. We still are in the first stages of this program, but positive results are already evident. Poa annua population is low and hand picking will be reinforced soon as seed heads become easily identified. At the same time, 'scouting' for kikuyu on greens will resume.
The ninth green was sodded last winter with material from the old nursery, because turf with the new variety (A4) and new sand type were unavailable. This patch is showing a lot of poa and diseases typical of the old grass, and, as soon as we have a new nursery, it should be stripped off and replaced.
Different amendments have been used in a regular program for different reasons: foliar fertilizers to balance nutrients; wetting agents to prevent dry patches; gypsum and calcium amendments to control sodic soils; algae extract to promote root growth; zeolites to increase nutrient holding capacity of the sand; ceramic particles to increase water holding capacity; humates to increase organic matter...
In a couple of weeks, a second hollow thinning will be done. We will try to prevent heavy equipment going on the greens to stop wheel tracks. A topdressing application will help to prevent thatch formation.

Tees and aprons: No peat or any other amendment were added during the construction to these areas; this now makes the tees and aprons more difficult to maintain, particularly when talking about water management. They are really difficult to keep wet and hand watering is frequently needed. Aeration and soil amendments are needed to alleviate this problem. We will keep working on this front.

Fairways: ryegrass and poa annua mix brought a somewhat patchy appearance this winter, but winter grasses will die back shortly. Mowing height has been lowered down to 10mm to help this process and to promote Bermuda grass growth. It seems that Bermuda grass is coming back adequately, but if we find any extensive areas not covering as we have to expect, sod will be used.
Aeration with a deep line and topdressing will start soon. Topdressing with a 0.5-1 cm layer is desirable, but we have to struggle with the difficulty of finding an area to store and pile all the sand. We are also still looking for the right material with a reasonable price.
Later on, a herbicide to control kikuyu on Bermuda grass will be tried. It is more likely that a complete eradication cannot be achieved, but, at least, it will help Bermuda grass to outcompete the Kikuyu.

Roughs: we have overseeded the roughs several times this autumn and winter, some with ryegrass, some with festuca rubra. With the later, we are trying to provide a species with lateral growth. However, in my opinion, this is still not enough, and we will have to maintain a continuous program. It is difficult to germinate seed in a hard bare soil.
In the meantime, we have to wait and see how roughs perform this summer once we experience the worst conditions: high temperature; saline and sodic irrigation water; and hard soils. It will be a real test to decide whether we use the same species on the back nine or if we go back to a Bermuda grass rough.
This is the area where topdressing is more important and so we will proceed. Adding sand will make it easier to establish new seed and to keep the soil wet but not soaked. It might be wise to program heavy topdressing next year, considering the back nine will be closed and stockpiling sand close to the front nine will be easier. Transportation of sand from the maintenance area to the upper holes is tedious.

BACK NINE

Greens: considering the greens will be refurbished soon, our goal is to keep them in good shape for this summer but not commence a long-term program. For instance, poa annua or Bermuda encroachment control is unhelpful, because it will take too long before favorable results. Still, aeration and topdressing will be carried out.

Fairways and rough: spring back is expected soon, probably sooner on fairways since the poa trivialis transition is easier. Our goal is to make it slowly, but after a dry hot period, it could happen suddenly. In this case, a brownish appearance is normal until the Bermuda grass comes back and replaces the winter species.
We do not think we should invest time in either aeration or a topdressing program.

MISCELLANEOUS

Weed control: the first pre-emergence application was already done and a second one is planned for the second week of May, once we have closed the course for maintenance. With this herbicide, annual summer weeds will be controlled (goosegrass and crabgrass, two common weeds in turf). Roughs on the front nine were not treated since overseeding was programmed.
Kikuyu control will continue in the roughs (several applications are needed) and, as mentioned before, special care will be taken in the fairways to keep Bermuda grass clean.

Algae control: An alga and other aquatic weeds boom has occurred. It is quite difficult to control and this is one of the reasons why an independent irrigation lake is proposed. These noxious algae not only ruin the view of the lakes, but also can plug the sprinklers if they reach the irrigation system. Chemical control is difficult since a continuous flow dilutes any application. Moreover, use of toxic products in a public creek is illegal. Even so, a couple of products labeled for algae control will be tested.

Irrigation and drainage: we keep working on both projects with a steady pace. However, drainage work will be soon be postponed until next year (after repairing the broken drainage near to green 8) since we should focus now on irrigation. New sprinklers have been installed and some are still to be done. New irrigation satellites have also been installed in the back nine and need to be programmed in the system.

Landscaping: stakes on holes 4 and 8 are the proposed location for several trees that will be purchased. A proposal for the right hand side banks on hole 2, include Adelfas (Nerium oleander) for the edges and Junipers (Junipero chinensis).
