PRIMEROS NUEVE HOYOS - FRONT NINE HOLES

NOTA IMPORTANTE
Estimados socios,

INFORME DEL COMITÉ DE CAMPO - STATEMENT FROM THE GREENS COMMITTEE

Informe del comité de campo, septiembre - 2013

Estimados socios,

September, 2013: Statement from the Greens Committee

Dear Members,
Following the recent announcement of the possible change in the commencement date for the back nine refurbishment, we would like to advise you on the action planned for the front nine roughs and fairways. We would also like to briefly explain why the rough suffered so much in late July and August this year.
Due to the timing of the completion of the front nine refurbishment, we were unable to sprig the fairway or rough areas with Bermuda (November is the wrong time of year); the advice given at the time was to seed with a cool season grass (Rye).  Disappointingly, it is now obvious to us all that this particular species could not cope with our water and soil conditions and the high temperatures in late July and August.
For many years now the rough areas on both nines have been a mixture of weed Kikuyu and very little Bermuda; in the best interests of the course, the front nine is being treated with an herbicide in an attempt to control these bad grasses.
After speaking with other course managers with similar water conditions we have been advised that the most successful cool season grass to use is Tall Fescue. Rafael, our Course Manager, has successfully trialed this through late July and August in our nursery and this species has done well.
The Schedule of Works is:
·      Rough:
From mid-September, the rough areas will be reseeded with Tall Fescue grass.
·      Fairways:
The main problems are on holes 2 and 3.  These areas are currently being repaired primarily with turf while we still have relatively high temperatures to enable the Bermuda grass to bed in.  Over seeding will take place at the beginning of October to ensure that the course is in good condition   throughout the autumn and winter.
It is anticipated that further works will be carried out as required on our fairways, particularly the second and third holes, next June when the over seeding is terminated; heavy top dressing and feeding will ensure a good surface - both visually and playability throughout all year round.
We believe the recommended change to commence the back nine renovation in September, 2014 is the sensible decision. It will allow us to kill the Kikuyu / bad grasses and Sand Cap the complete back nine holes, growing in the new Bermuda from Sprigs; the quality of the Bermuda will be excellent and this approach will be financially beneficial.
We also continue to take external advice from SURTEC - ACTTUA (as indicated in the AGM Proposal for the back nine renovations) - a company which has undertaken several projects, including the project management for the construction of “La Moraleja 3” and “La Moraleja 4”, both Jack Nicklaus courses, one of them a signature course. In addition, David Gómez Agüera, Head Greenkeeper for the Royal Spanish Federation, has agreed to provide a future report. Reports will be available at the managers office for your review.
Finally, we would like to apologies to those Members who used the course in August for the above grassing problems, and to all Members for any disruptions until the work is completed.
Greens Committee.

FUTURA REFORMA - FUTURE REFURBISHMENT

Últimas noticias: Reforma

Estimados Socios,

Junta Directiva,
Real Club de Golf Las Brisas

Update: Course Refurbishment

Dear Members,

As you may be aware the Course is currently experiencing poor grass conditions - both rough and some fairways.

We are currently taken action to rectify these problems to enable the members to enjoy the front nine holes in good condition through the coming winter and summer 2014.

We want to keep you informed of our plans for the refurbishment of the back nine holes.

Given the current fairway grassing problems on the front nine holes, we are examining the possibility of delaying the start of the refurbishment of the back nine holes until September, 2014; this will ensure we maximise the utilisation of the best growing periods for our Bermuda Grass. The killing of ‘bad’ grasses will be carried out and completed before earth moving, and it is expected turf laying will not be required thus giving us the opportunity to sand cap and sprig with Bermuda grass. This process will save the club several hundred thousand euros and ensure excellent Bermuda fairways.

*The back nine holes are expected to be re-opened by August, 2015.

If this timing decision is made, it will obviously mean all 18 holes will be open throughout the coming winter and next summer.

We also want to stress that, notwithstanding the short-term fairway grassing problems that are being addressed currently, we believe the refurbishment of the front nine holes was well-executed; all the features have been installed correctly: Tees; Bunkers; Greens; Irrigation; and Drainage.

We will continue to keep you informed of progress.
